What does a SOC analyst do? Role, salary and how to become one in India

SOC stands for Security Operations Centre — the room (or remote team) where an organisation's cyber defence actually happens. A SOC analyst is the person watching the screens: monitoring alerts, investigating suspicious activity, and deciding whether that 2 AM alarm is an attack or a false positive.

It is the most common first job in Indian cyber security, and for good reason: you learn more in one year of SOC work than in three years of only studying.

What a SOC analyst actually does all day

A typical shift:

  1. Triage alerts — your SIEM (the central monitoring tool) fires hundreds of alerts. You sort real threats from noise.
  2. Investigate — for suspicious alerts, you dig into logs: who logged in, from where, what did they touch, is this normal for this user?
  3. Escalate or close — real incidents go to senior analysts or the incident response team; false positives get documented and tuned out.
  4. Document everything — every investigation becomes a case note. Good notes are what separate average analysts from good ones.

The tools you will use

  • SIEM platforms — Splunk, IBM QRadar, Microsoft Sentinel. The heart of the SOC.
  • EDR tools — CrowdStrike, Microsoft Defender — for investigating what happened on a specific machine.
  • Threat intelligence feeds — lists of known-bad IPs, domains and file hashes.
  • Ticketing systems — where cases live and get tracked.

You do not need to know all of these before applying. You need to understand the concepts: logs, alerts, the attack lifecycle.

Ranges vary by city — Bengaluru and Hyderabad typically pay at the top of the band. See our city-by-city breakdowns, for example cyber security jobs in Bengaluru and Hyderabad.

How to become a SOC analyst: the realistic path

  1. Learn networking fundamentals — TCP/IP, DNS, HTTP, common ports. This is non-negotiable; every investigation touches the network.
  2. Learn operating systems and logs — Windows Event Viewer and Linux logs are where evidence lives.
  3. Understand attacks — phishing, brute force, malware behaviour, lateral movement. You cannot spot what you do not understand.
  4. Practice on free platforms — TryHackMe and LetsDefend have SOC-specific hands-on paths.
  5. Consider a certification — Security+ or a SOC-specific cert helps your resume survive screening, though skills matter more in the interview.
  6. Prepare for the interview — SOC interviews are scenario-heavy: "a user reports a suspicious email, walk me through your investigation."

What SOC interviews actually test

Interviewers want structured thinking under pressure. Expect questions like: what is the difference between an IDS and IPS, how do you investigate a phishing email, what is a false positive, explain the cyber kill chain. Our SOC analyst interview questions guide covers the full set with model answers.

Frequently asked questions

What is a SOC analyst in simple terms? A security analyst who monitors an organisation's systems for attacks, investigates alerts, and helps respond to incidents — the front line of cyber defence.

Is SOC analyst a good first job? Yes. It is the most common entry point into cyber security in India and exposes you to real attacks, real tools and real investigations from day one.

Do SOC analysts need coding? Not for L1. Basic scripting (Python, PowerShell) becomes valuable at L2 and above, but investigation skills and networking knowledge matter far more at the start.

Are SOC jobs shift-based? Usually yes — attacks do not follow office hours, so most SOCs run 24/7 rotations. It is worth asking about shift patterns in your interview.
