Best cyber security certifications for freshers in India: CEH vs Security+ vs SC-200
Certifications are the most over-bought item in a fresher''s security career. The right one gets your resume past a filter. The wrong three cost you months and change nothing. Here is how the common options compare for someone in India applying to their first role.
What a certification does and does not do
It does: get you through automated and human resume screening, prove you finished something, and give you a shared vocabulary.
It does not: convince an interviewer you can do the job. That is what a lab and a write-up do. Treat the certificate as a key to the door, not as the argument you make once you are inside.
CompTIA Security+
What it signals: broad, vendor-neutral security fundamentals. It is the most widely recognised baseline in job descriptions worldwide, including in Indian GCCs and MNC-aligned employers.
Best for: anyone who is undecided between SOC, network security, IAM and GRC, and wants one credential that is accepted everywhere.
Watch out for: it is a mile wide and an inch deep. It will not, on its own, prepare you for a technical triage conversation.
Microsoft SC-200 (Security Operations Analyst)
What it signals: you can work inside Microsoft Sentinel and Defender — which a large share of Indian enterprise SOCs run.
Best for: candidates targeting L1/L2 SOC roles at Microsoft-stack shops. It pairs unusually well with a Sentinel home lab, because the exam content and the lab reinforce each other.
Watch out for: it is stack-specific. If your target employers run Splunk or QRadar, the signal is weaker (though the concepts still transfer).
CEH (Certified Ethical Hacker)
What it signals: familiarity with offensive tooling and terminology. It has strong brand recognition with Indian recruiters and HR filters, and it appears by name in many job descriptions.
Best for: candidates specifically targeting VAPT, application security or roles where the JD names CEH.
Watch out for: it is the most expensive of the three, and it is largely multiple-choice knowledge unless you take the practical variant. It does not make you a pentester, and offensive entry roles are far fewer than blue-team ones in India.
Practical blue-team certifications
Hands-on, lab-based blue-team certifications sit differently: less recruiter brand recognition, much stronger signal in a technical round because you have actually investigated something.
Best for: candidates whose bottleneck is confidence and evidence, not resume screening.
Cloud-adjacent options
If you are aiming at cloud security, a cloud fundamentals certification (AWS or Azure) followed by the vendor's security specialty is usually a better sequence than a general security certificate. Cloud security roles rarely go to true freshers, so treat this as a second-year plan.

- Count which certifications are named.
- Buy the one that appears most.
