Cyber security fresher salary in India: role-by-role breakdown
Salary is the first question almost every fresher asks, and the honest answer is that "cyber security" is not one job. An L1 SOC analyst in Bengaluru and a GRC analyst in Pune are paid on different scales, by different kinds of employers, for different work. This guide breaks the market down role by role so you can aim at a number that is real for your profile.
How to read the numbers below
The ranges here describe what entry-level cyber security roles are commonly advertised at on Indian job boards. They are not a guarantee and they move every year. Before you negotiate, check the live figures for your exact role and city on Naukri, AmbitionBox and Glassdoor India — those sites show current, employer-reported data, and a range you can cite in an interview is worth more than a number you half-remember.
Three factors move a fresher offer more than anything else:
- Employer type. Global capability centres (GCCs) and product companies generally pay above IT services and managed security service providers (MSSPs) for the same title.
- Shift work. 24x7 SOC roles usually carry a shift allowance on top of base.
- Demonstrated skill. A candidate who can walk through an alert triage end to end lands at the top of a band; one who can only define terms lands at the bottom.
L1 SOC analyst
The highest-volume entry point in India. You monitor a SIEM queue, triage alerts, escalate true positives, and document what you did.
What decides your number: whether you can explain a real triage — the alert that fired, what you checked, why you closed or escalated it. Hands-on time with Splunk, Microsoft Sentinel or QRadar, even in a home lab, moves you up a band.
Network security / firewall engineer
Entry roles supporting firewalls, VPNs and proxies. Common in IT services and telecom.
What decides your number: vendor familiarity (Palo Alto, Fortinet, Cisco) and whether you can reason about traffic flow rather than recite port numbers.
Identity and access management (IAM) analyst
Provisioning, access reviews, joiner-mover-leaver processes. Often overlooked by freshers, which makes it less crowded.
What decides your number: exposure to Active Directory and Azure AD/Entra, plus an understanding of least privilege in practice.
GRC / compliance analyst
Policy, audit evidence, risk registers, ISO 27001 and SOC 2 support. Less technical, more written communication.
What decides your number: clear writing and the ability to explain a control's intent, not just its clause number.
Cloud security associate
The fastest-growing band, and usually the best-paid entry route — but it rarely goes to a true fresher unless you already hold cloud fundamentals and can talk about misconfiguration in a real console.
What decides your number: an AWS or Azure security-adjacent certification plus a lab you can show.
Application security / VAPT trainee
Web application testing, report writing, retesting. Popular with candidates who came through bug bounty or CTFs.
What decides your number: a public write-up trail. Nothing else converts as fast for this role.
City matters, but less than you think
Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Gurugram and Chennai carry the most cyber security hiring, and metro offers usually sit above tier-2 offers for the same title. Adjust for cost of living before you get excited — a higher Bengaluru number can be a lower real income than a Pune one.
How to actually move your offer up
- Pick one role and go deep. A candidate who says "SOC analyst, and here is my Sentinel lab" beats one who says "any cyber security role".
- Build one artefact. A triage write-up, a small detection rule, a hardening checklist you wrote. It becomes the thing you talk about in every round.
- Rehearse out loud. Most fresher offers are lost in the explanation, not the knowledge. Interviewers hire the person who can walk them through their reasoning calmly.
- Know your range before the call. When asked for expectations, give a researched band and say what it is based on.
- Do not undersell shift roles. A 24x7 SOC seat is a legitimate, fast-learning first job. Two years in a busy SOC is worth more than three years in a quiet one.
