Cyber security salary in India (2026): by role, city and experience

Cyber security pay in India is wide. Two people with the same job title, the same two years of experience and the same certification can be ₹6 lakh apart, because the pay is set by the domain you work in, the city you work from and whether your employer is a service company or a product company.

This guide breaks the ranges down so you can tell where you should be sitting, and what moves the number.

₹19.5 crore

Average cost of a data breach for an Indian organisation in 2024 — the reason security budgets keep growing

IBM Cost of a Data Breach Report 2024

4.8 million

Global shortfall of cyber security professionals

ISC2 Cybersecurity Workforce Study 2024

68%

Breaches involving a non-malicious human element, which is what SOC teams are hired to catch

How to read salary numbers in India

Salary aggregators such as AmbitionBox and Glassdoor India publish self-reported ranges. They are useful for the shape of the market, not as a promise. Three rules before you use any number:

  1. Compare fixed pay, not CTC. Indian offers bundle variable pay, joining bonus and gratuity into CTC. A ₹9 LPA offer can be ₹7.4 LPA fixed.
  2. Compare within a company type. Large IT services firms pay a band; product companies, banks and global capability centres (GCCs) pay another; boutique consultancies another again.
  3. Compare within a city. Bengaluru and Hyderabad GCC pay is routinely 20–35% above the same title in a tier-2 city.

Entry level (0–2 years)

RoleTypical fixed rangeWhat moves you to the top of the band
SOC analyst (L1)₹3.5–6.5 LPASIEM hands-on, clean incident write-ups, rotational shift willingness
IT / security support with security scope₹3–5 LPAScripting, ticket-to-detection thinking
GRC analyst / associate₹4–7 LPAISO 27001 or SOC 2 audit exposure, strong written English
Cloud security associate₹5–9 LPAAZ-500 or AWS Security Specialty plus real console time
VAPT / penetration testing trainee₹4–8 LPAPublic write-ups, CTF placements, a report a hiring manager can read

The single biggest jump at this level is not a certification — it is being able to talk through a real investigation out loud. Most freshers lose the round on the scenario question, not on theory.

Mid level (3–6 years)

RoleTypical fixed range
SOC analyst L2 / L3, threat hunter₹8–18 LPA
Cloud security engineer₹14–28 LPA
Application security engineer₹12–26 LPA
GRC lead / risk consultant₹10–22 LPA
Incident response consultant₹12–25 LPA

Cloud and application security pull ahead here because the supply of people who can both read code or infrastructure-as-code and reason about attack paths is genuinely small.

Senior (7+ years)

Security architects, SOC managers and product security leads in Indian GCCs commonly sit between ₹28 LPA and ₹60 LPA fixed, with CISO-track roles above that. At this level the pay is set by scope — number of systems, regulatory exposure, headcount — not by title.

City by city

Remote roles have compressed this a little, but most Indian employers still anchor pay to a location band. If you take a remote role at a Bengaluru-headquartered company, ask explicitly whether the band is location-adjusted.

What actually raises your offer

  • Domain choice. Moving from generic SOC monitoring into cloud security or detection engineering is worth more than two extra years in the same seat.
  • Evidence you can be trusted alone at 2 a.m. Interviewers pay for judgement under pressure. That is why the scenario round decides most offers.
  • Written communication. Every incident ends in a report someone non-technical reads. Candidates who write clearly get promoted faster.
  • Negotiating on fixed pay. Ask for the fixed component to move, not the CTC headline.

Where most candidates lose money

Not at the negotiation — at the interview. If you answer the containment scenario vaguely, you are offered the bottom of the band regardless of your resume. Practising the answer out loud is the cheapest raise available to you.

Frequently asked questions

Does a certification increase salary directly?

Rarely on its own. CEH, Security+ or SC-200 get you shortlisted; the interview sets the number. Cloud certifications (AZ-500, AWS Security Specialty) correlate with higher bands mainly because they map to higher-paying work.

Is a computer science degree required?

No. Plenty of SOC and GRC hires come from IT support, networking and non-CS engineering. What is required is the ability to explain how you would investigate something.

How fast can pay grow in the first five years?

A common trajectory is L1 at ₹4–6 LPA, L2 at ₹8–12 LPA by year three, and specialisation into cloud or detection engineering at ₹15 LPA+ by year five. It depends far more on switching into a scarce domain than on staying put.
