Interview tips for Pune employers
- Keep all beginner experiments away from live industrial networks, controllers and safety systems.
- Use synthetic packet captures and endpoint logs to demonstrate correlation before discussing OT tools.
- Explain how uptime, safety and maintenance windows change response decisions.
- Distinguish enterprise IT responsibilities from plant or production-system responsibilities in each role.
- Check the exact worksite, travel requirements and shift pattern before pricing relocation.
LESSON 01
Create an IT investigation portfolio with an OT safety boundary
Build a Pune-oriented project that investigates a synthetic engineering workstation’s unexpected outbound connection without touching industrial equipment. Use two owned virtual machines on an isolated network and harmless traffic to a controlled local service. Describe the boundary clearly: this demonstrates IT evidence handling, not permission to assess a factory. Include a network sketch and explain which systems, actions and time window your lab authorisation covers explicitly.
In Wireshark, examine source and destination addresses, ports, protocol fields and timing, then correlate them with endpoint records. Packet evidence may establish that a connection occurred but not which user intended it or whether its contents were malicious. Windows process creation Event 4688 requires the appropriate audit configuration, and command-line detail needs additional configuration. Service installation Event 7045 belongs to the System log, not the Security log.
Prepare a timeline that marks clock differences, missing visibility and alternative explanations such as an approved engineering update. Keep original captures separate from annotated copies and use synthetic names and reserved addresses in published extracts. Explain that an OT extension would require process-owner involvement and an approved safety plan. Do not imply that ordinary IT scanning, isolation or restart procedures are automatically safe for production-connected equipment.
- Create an isolated owned lab and document that no industrial systems are in scope.
- Generate harmless local traffic and collect a packet capture plus configured endpoint logs.
- Correlate packet timing with endpoint events, recording clock and visibility limitations.
- Publish a sanitised timeline and a separate statement of OT safety constraints.
- Expected lab observation
- The capture should show the test connection. Configured endpoint evidence may help attribute it; missing audit data should remain a stated limitation rather than being invented.
- Common mistake
- Claiming that a packet capture alone proves process attribution or that a workstation lab establishes OT assessment competence.
- NIST SP 800-61 Rev. 3: Incident ResponseFinal · April 2025; supersedes Rev. 2
- Microsoft Windows: event 4688Audit policy and field availability matter
LESSON 02
Match IT, engineering and manufacturing-linked roles carefully
Read each role description for the environment you would actually support. An enterprise monitoring job, an engineering endpoint role and a plant security position can share terminology while requiring different decisions. Build a comparison table covering assets, expected tasks, access level, travel and safety responsibilities. Treat Pune’s manufacturing association as a reason to ask sharper questions, not as evidence that a particular employer is recruiting today.
For IT operations applications, foreground your packet-to-endpoint timeline and a clear escalation note. For engineering security, add a change assessment that considers compatibility and rollback. For manufacturing-linked work, demonstrate that you know when to stop and involve the process owner. You can organise your learning with NIST CSF 2.0’s six Functions: Govern, Identify, Protect, Detect, Respond and Recover, without presenting that framework as industrial operating instructions.
Use a verified application channel and label every project as lab, coursework or authorised work. Ask whether the position includes plant access, vendor coordination, travel between sites or support outside normal hours. Clarify supervision and training for unfamiliar environments before describing yourself as ready for independent work. A focused evidence pack with honest limitations is more useful than a list of industrial protocol names you cannot explain.
- Separate target roles by environment, access and safety responsibility.
- Map each required task to evidence or an explicit training need.
- Tailor the portfolio summary without overstating industrial experience.
- Verify site access, supervision, travel and out-of-hours expectations.
- Expected lab observation
- The application should demonstrate relevant IT capability and a clear boundary around tasks requiring additional industrial training or authorisation.
- Common mistake
- Assuming that shared security terminology makes enterprise IT and plant security responsibilities interchangeable.

LESSON 03
Interview tabletop: an engineering endpoint near production
Use a tabletop where a synthetic engineering laptop produces an alert while connected to a network supporting production. The interviewer asks whether to disconnect it immediately. Start by identifying the laptop’s process role, active connections, safety implications and your response authority. Explain that containment choices must consider consequences beyond the laptop itself. Neither automatic disconnection nor automatic inaction is a defensible universal answer in this setting.
Request endpoint telemetry, relevant packet evidence, recent change records and process-owner input. Check whether the alert corresponds to an approved update or an unexpected executable, but never run an unknown file on a workstation. Preserve available evidence and describe authorised analysis paths. Propose containment options through the incident lead and operational owner, including whether a controlled network restriction or planned transition can reduce risk without unsafe disruption.
Practise entirely with written injects and synthetic logs in an owned lab. Have one participant explain an operational dependency that was initially missing, then revise the recommendation. Your expected answer should state evidence, uncertainty, authority, operational impact and verification criteria. Record why a chosen action is proportionate and what would trigger escalation. A good result is a justified decision trail, not a demonstration of aggressive tool use.
- Clarify the endpoint’s operational role and documented response authority.
- Correlate endpoint, packet and change evidence without executing unknown files.
- Discuss response options with the designated incident and process owners.
- Document operational checks and conditions for escalating or changing the plan.
- Expected lab observation
- Expected answer: investigate promptly, account for safety and dependencies, preserve evidence and choose containment through authorised operational coordination.
- Common mistake
- Applying a standard office-endpoint isolation playbook to production-connected equipment without checking consequences.
- NIST SP 800-61 Rev. 3: Incident ResponseFinal · April 2025; supersedes Rev. 2
LESSON 04
Verify site-based compensation and Pune relocation costs
When comparing an IT or manufacturing-linked offer, request fixed pay, variable pay, shift payments and travel reimbursements as separate items. Confirm which benefits are included in CTC and which costs require an expense claim. Ask whether customer-site or plant assignments change working hours or allowances. CTC is not take-home pay, and a reimbursement should not be treated as extra disposable income when it offsets an expense.
Build relocation costs around the confirmed worksite rather than a generic city centre. Check realistic commute options for the actual shift, temporary housing, rental deposits, moving costs and site-to-site travel. Ask whether transport covers your residence and whether attendance can move between office and customer locations. Engineering or plant-linked work may involve physical presence, but the specific arrangement must be verified rather than inferred from the sector.
Use two fictional offers to practise comparing cash flow and obligations. One can include more conditional pay and travel, while the other has a simpler fixed structure; avoid declaring a universal winner. Confirm the employment entity, worksite, probation and any repayment terms through written documents. Ask who provides required equipment and site training. Record unresolved questions before accepting, and keep personal verification documents out of public portfolio repositories.
- Separate compensation, conditional allowances and expense reimbursement.
- Confirm every regular worksite, travel obligation and attendance rule.
- Collect current quotes for housing, transport and upfront relocation costs.
- Compare fictional offers using both monthly cash flow and practical obligations.
- Expected lab observation
- The comparison should reveal how site location, travel and conditional payments affect affordability without assuming reimbursement is profit.
- Common mistake
- Budgeting for a central office commute when the role actually requires regular customer or plant attendance.

Frequently asked questions
Can I scan factory equipment to practise?
No, not without explicit authorisation and an approved safety plan. Even discovery traffic can affect sensitive equipment. Use isolated owned simulations or supplied synthetic captures.
Is IT security experience enough for OT work?
It can provide a foundation, but OT adds process, safety, availability and vendor constraints. Do not claim industrial competence from an ordinary network lab.
Do packet captures prove which process caused traffic?
Usually not by themselves. Correlate packet fields and timing with endpoint evidence, accounting for clock differences and collection gaps.
What location details matter in an offer?
Confirm whether work is at an office, customer site or plant, along with travel frequency, transport, attendance and any rotation between sites.
